RIP Earl Palmer 10/25/1924-9/19/2008: Legendary New Orleans drummer Earl Palmer passed away on Friday. He was 83. Earl Palmer was simply one of the greatest drummers of all time. He created a number of distinctive beats and drum accents that became synonymous with the early sound. of Rock 'N Roll. Can you imagine Little Richard's "Keep A-Knockin'" or Fats Domino's "I'm Walkin'" without Earl Palmer's catchy beat? His session credits from both New Orleans and his later home of Los Angeles read like the greatest hits of all music, but his contributions to early Rock 'N Roll are perhaps his most influential. To read the LA Times obituary, which contains a beautifully written biographical overview of Earl Palmer's amazing musical life and achievements, click here. Thank you, Earl Palmer, for the grooves!

September 21, 2008RIP Nappy Brown 10/12/1929-9/20/2008: The legendary blues shouter Nappy Brown left us Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 10:30 pm. He was 78. In addition to being blessed with one of the greatest voices the blues has ever known, Nappy was a true character, and his action-packed stage performances were simply amazing. He had experienced a comeback of late after the release of his brilliant 2007 CD Long Time Coming, produced by longtime Nappy friend and advocate Scott Cable for the Blind Pig record label. He was born Napoleon Brown Culp on Oct 12, 1929 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and started his music career singing gospel before switching to Rhythm & Blues in the early 1950s. He landed a contract with Savoy Records in 1954 which yielded numerous hits, including “Don't Be Angry”, “I Cried Like A Baby”, and “Night Time Is The Right Time” (which Ray Charles would cover shortly afterwards). His music career had a resurgence in the 1980s with albums on Alligator, Ichiban, and Black Top. He also made guest appearances on albums by Bob Margolin and Bob Corritore, as well as appearing on the Rhythm Room Blues anthology released on HighTone (Nappy's photo appeared on the cover of that CD). His powerhouse performance last May at the 2008 Blues Music Awards ceremony was the highlight of that event. Shortly after that, Nappy was hospitalized; and never was able to get his health back. Information regarding his services (forthcoming on Saturday, September 27, 2008) will be posted as it comes in. Bob Corritore will play a number of sets of Nappy's unforgettable music throughout the course of his 5 hour show tonight; listeners may hear Those Lowdown Blues, anywhere in the world (real time Sunday nights from 6pm-11pm Phoenix time) via web streaming by clicking here, or on KJZZ in Phoenix at 91.5 FM in Phoenix, Arizona, 89.5 in Cottonwood, 98.9 in Tucson, and 99.1 in Kingman. Rest in peace, Nappy.

September 5, 2008Chicago Blues Guitarist Pete Allen Passes: News of Pete Allen's passing earlier this week came today from Kevin Johnson of Delmark Records. This guitarist/vocalist is best known for his recorded work with Magic Slim & The Teardrops (Grand Slam on Rooster), Carey Bell (Harpmaster on JSP), Artie "Blues Boy" White (American Roots Blues on Ichiban), and Zora Young (Tore Up From The Floor Up on Delmark). He was a sought-after guitarist in Chicago, and also worked with Buddy Guy, Lurrie Bell, and Piano C. Red. Though well recognized and respected in his hometown, Pete sadly never received his due acclaim on the national scene. Visitation will be Friday, September 12, 2008, 10am, at A.A. Rayner, 318 E. 71st, Chicago IL 60619, and the service will follow at 11am. The Chicago blues community has been hard hit of late with the recent passings of Little Arthur and Phil Guy. Rest in peace, Pete.

Volume 6, No. 36
ON MY MIND...
Another September, another ‘cane! We’re back. OffBeat is open for business as usual. We ran to Baton Rouge early Sunday morning, after the “official” evacuation order was given out. BR is where we usually go, but this time it got slammed a lot worse than New Orleans did. I’ve never seen so many houses with trees ON them. And no electricity. But no flooding there or in our neck of the woods. When we rode into New Orleans last night from Baton Rouge, most of the city along the interstate was lit up. As we rode down Dryades Street to our neighborhood, most of that was lit up too…hope, hope, we know it’s gonna be on…until we hit Jackson Avenue. Then total darkness. Crap. We lugged in all the bags of half-eaten popcorn, fruit and beef jerky, warm canned soft drinks and the ice chest with what was scavenged from our refrigerators, into a pitch- dark house, then tried to sleep (believe me, sweating at home is better than at someone else’s house. No less wet, but you just feel less disgusting lying in a pool of your own sweat in your own bed). By the time we got up this morning, the power was on at the office, so here we are. But I think we may be sleeping at the office tonight. And we're hoping that Ike and Josephine stay away from Louisiana. We don’t have any wetlands left to soak up any storm, as our friends to the south know very well. If you haven’t done so already, please renew your OffBeat subscription. We want to be able to continue to update you on what’s happening down here, y’all! Read Publisher/Editor-in-Chief Jan Ramsey's monthly commentary "Mojo Mouth".
As always, we appreciate your reading OffBeat, and the Weekly Beat, our e-publication, and welcome your comments on what can make it better. OffBeat's "VOODOO FEST" deadline for space reservations is September 17.
We love you for supporting Louisiana music and culture!

F R O M B O B DA V I S @ S OU L P A T R O L :
The Black & Tan Record Label is one of my favorite labels. Some of you may recall me talking quite a bit about them a few years ago. They have a tremendous track record in coming up with compelling artists that produce Blues music, that is steeped in the tradition, but that is also relevant to the modern world. More specifically to the modern world of Black folks and in choosing to take that direction, they seem to be diametrically opposed to the rest of the Blues establishment. Of course, that makes them friends of mine :-)
Of course to make matters even more interesting, we have a "Blues label", based in Europe that has a greater feel for modern day Black America, than do American Blues labels and they use their music to make a statement about it. Does it surprise you that the most progressive Blues label, the one that is most in touch with modern day Black America is headquartered in Denmark and whose CEO speaks broken English ? Maybe it shouldn't. We live in a world in 2008, where both the best golfer and the leading presidential candidate are "multi-ethnic Black Americans", that the mass media accuses of being "out of touch with the common man." And of course the most popular R&B artist in the world is a young white girl from England, who looks like she just crawled out of a coffin.
P.S. I wouldnt dare to disagree with Bob except from his mix up of Holland and Denmark.
