Bluesbreakers in CHINA
CD-Reviews
Die Bluesbreakers sind zu einem fixen Bestandteil der österreichischen Musikszene geworden;
Mit ihrem Album „A GOOD DAY FOR THE BLUES“ geben die BB wieder richtig Gas. Erdig, rau, eigene Titel sowie Bluesstandards im BB-Stil dies ist die Mischung die seit Jahrzehnten das Erfolgsrezept der Bluesbreakers bildet!
"If that Band don't get you movin', consult your doctor - maybe you're dead"

Plattenkritiken:
A Good Day For The Blues
.....Blues Life
Konzertkritiken:
Tiroler Tageszeitung:
China Daily:
Six Austrian rock'n'rollers threw 18 000 Chinese fans into a frenzy on Wednesday night at the Beijing's Workers Stadium. Dieter Themel and his Bluesbreakers performed both Austrian and American songs and managed to sing a top Chinese hit "Nothing I have" which brought the house down.
Kleine Zeitung:

>>>>> Pre-Super Bowl Blues Events this weekend at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix: As thousands of visitors pour into Phoenix from all around the world for the Super Bowl, there are two blues events of note at the Rhythm Room in the days prior to this spectacular sports event:
Friday, February 1, 2008: Little Charlie & The Nightcats - Charlie is retiring! This Friday's show may be the last time Phoenicians will have the opportunity to see this notorious and spirited blues band. Charlie Baty, the guitarist and bandleader of the Nightcats, has announced his intentions of retiring after the band's European dates in March. After over 30 years of performing and ten albums on the Alligator record label, the dynasty will finally come to an end. Little Charlie has told Bob in a personal phone call that he was tired of life on the road. Charlie also mentioned that Nightcats harmonica ace and frontman Rick Estrin is working up a new, yet to be named project, and will keep the tradition of this band going. Little Charlie is simply an amazing guitarist and his dynamic playing will be missed on the national and international touring circuit. A press release put out by Piedmont Talent seems to leave the door open for a "reunion" tour or special appearances. Let's hope that we have not heard the last of this great guitarist. The Rhythm Room is located at 1019 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Doors open at 8pm, cover charge is $15. Rack Shack Barbeque will be available at this event. This night will be a patio smoking only event; no indoor smoking will be permitted.
Saturday, February 2, 2008: Super Bowl Blues Pre-Party with Dave Riley & Bob Corritore Band, Long John Hunter, and Big Pete Pearson. A night of pure traditional blues. The night will be hosted by the BMA-nominated Dave Riley and Bob Corritore and their band, including Dave Riley, Jr. on bass, and Tom "Hacksaw" Coulson on drums. Look for guest appearances by Arizona's King of the Blues, Big Pete Pearson; and Long John Hunter, who says this is his first live appearance anywhere in four years. The Rhythm Room is located at 1019 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Doors open at 8pm, cover charge is $10. Rack Shack Barbeque will be available at this event. This night will be a patio smoking only event; no indoor smoking will be permitted.

The Mannish Boys, now one of the greatest touring blues units around, recorded what will be their fourth CD. Johnny Dyer, Finis Tasby, Bobby Jones, special guest Little Sammy Davis, and others will be featured on this new release out later this year. Former Aces vocalist Bobby Jones also laid down his own CD at the same time. Bobby is a stunning singer who can handle a wide range of material. It will be great to finally have a whole CD to capture the depth of this man's talent. Randy has played a few selections from these forthcoming releases to Bob over the phone, and they are simply top-notch performances. January 24, 2008>>>>> Plans for Jimmy Rogers Book announced: Though still in the research stages, Dr. Wayne Everett Goins has announced his intentions to author a book that will be titled That's All Right: The Jimmy Rogers Story. Jimmy Rogers is simply one of the greatest blues artists that ever lived, and he, along with Muddy Waters and Little Walter, were architects of the classic Chicago Blues style of the early 1950s. I had heard about this book project last year from Jacque Lane, Jimmy's daughter who had called me to tell me to expect a call from Dr. Goins. The call came this week, and I found Dr. Goins to be a simply wonderful person with a great love for Jimmy's music. I was able to provide him with photos, stories, contacts, and support. He has already compiled a long list of interviews with others who knew and worked with Jimmy, but his work is far from complete. If anyone would be willing to share stories, information, photos or memorabilia on Jimmy Rogers, please contact Dr. Goins as soon as possible. His contact information:

Also on this week's Radio Show: In addition to the Chico Chism tribute, Bob will also have a live on-air performance by Long John Hunter, a tribute to the late Francis Clay, and special guest Phoenix music historian John "Johnny D" Dixon for the annual Phoenix vintage R&B special. FRANCIS CLAY - November 16, 1923 - January 23, 2008:
Another legendary Chicago blues master has left us. J.D. and Laura Diamond report the passing last night of drummer Francis Clay.
Born in Rock Island, IL, on November 16, 1923, Clay quickly found a love of music. He first picked up the guitar at age 5 and soon switched to drums. By age 14, he was playing professionally and found leanings towards jazz. He had an entrepreneurial spirit and dabbled in a music lessons, a booking agency and a recording studio. He worked with George "Harmonica" Smith in late 1940's, toured with jazz organ great Brother Jack McDuff in the early 1950's and landed a 4 year stint with the acclaimed Muddy Waters band in 1957. It was his time in Muddy's band that he is most famous for and great records such as "Got My Mojo Workin'", "She's 19 Years Old" and "Walkin' Thru The Park" would not have been the same with out his brisk, interactive beat. In 1962, he left Muddy to form a band with James Cotton and then worked with Otis Rush and Buddy Guy before rejoining Muddy's band in 1965 for a two-year run. He would go on to work and record with Lightnin' Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Reed, Otis Spann, Shakey Jake, Victoria Spivey, Sunnyland Slim, Big Mama Thornton, and many others. Some classic albums on which Francis Clay performed are Muddy Waters "Live At Newport", Muddy Waters "Sings Big Bill Broonzy", Otis Spann "The Blues Is Where It's At", James Cotton "Pure Cotton" and John Lee Hooker "Live At Cafe Au-Go-Go". He would retire from drums due to knee problems and crippling arthritis and settle in San Francisco, California where he was an honored elder statesman of the blues in his community. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Francis was a frequent guest of honor at Randy Chortkoff''s annual Little Walter Festival in Los Angeles, and was presented with the festival's "Hall Of Fame Award". His last recording, released in 2004, was a guest appearance on Johnny Dyer's "Rolling Fork Revisited" (produced by Mark Hummel), where he plays a cut backing Johnny with fellow Muddy alumni Paul Oscher. He was a kind and gracious man who was proud of great history in blues music. We will miss him greatly.

>>>>> Tomcat Courtney CD Cover Unveiled: The cover of Tomcat Courtney/Downsville Blues has been completed. This is one of the most anticipated of Bob Corritore's productions in that it is the first national release by this amazing blues master who has been the secret treasure of San Diego. Tomcat, now 78, was originally from around Waco, Texas, and grew up in the neighboring small town called Downsville (therefore the name of the title song of the album). The cover photo is by Nena Anderson, and cover design by Tony Amato of Amato Image Design, who has designed numerous great CD covers for Bob. Thanks to Dale Baich and Beth Lipham of Blue Witch Records. The rest of the packaging will be unveiled shortly and will include some vintage Tomcat photos plus additional images by Nena Anderson and Tony Tomlinson (of The Fremonts) as well as liner notes by Bill Dahl. But the real treat will be the amazing music that will be coming soon with a release date soon to be announced for later this year. >>>>> Johnny Shines on YouTube: One of the greatest country blues singers and guitarists, Johnny Shines has frequently been overlooked . He was a traveling companion of the legendary Robert Johnson. Shines was a stirring slide player and had a rich and electrifying voice. He started his recording career in the 1950's cutting sides on J.O.B. and Chess. He would make an easy transition back and forth between solo country blues and ensemble Chicago blues, of which he played both styles to perfection. For his bio, click here. Seeing these videos reminds us of his brilliance in the blues. Please enjoy.

Though there were some sad losses of beloved artists and blues people, there were also great adventures, recording sessions, recognitions, airplay and CD sales, festivals and performances, musical growth, and lots of love and support.
>>>>> Great Year at KJZZ: Bob's radio show Those Lowdown Blues on KJZZ turned 23 years old. It was honored by The Blues Foundation with a KBA Award (Keeping The Blues Alive) in which Bob went to Memphis to receive a special award. Every week, this is a time that Bob gets to play music from his vast collection of blues recordings. Some special shows that come to mind are:
The annual Phoenix R&B show with Bob's radio mentor John ("Johnny D") Dixon
An amazing on-air performance by Tomcat Courtney and Chris James
Pinetop Perkins: The 94 year old blues piano master gave a two hour interview as we played and commented on many of his historical records with Earl Hooker, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, and others
Jerry Lawson, former lead singer of The Persuasions, stopped by to share his latest release with his new A Capella group, Jerry Lawson & Talk Of The Town. Jerry's interviews always include lots of delightful "on the spot" singing
A weekend with guests Henry Gray, Billy Flynn, and Eddie Kobek joining Big Pete Pearson and The Rhythm Room All-Stars

It was the hardest show ever on so many levels; but it was so important to give this great bluesman his due. He added so much to the Phoenix Blues Community and to the blues world at large
A tribute show to the late Ike Turner, of which about four of the show's five hours were focused on Ike's amazing recorded contributions to blues. Many listeners commented that they never realized all that Ike had done: recordings with B.B. King, Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf, Charlie Booker, Otis Rush, Jackie Brenston, Little Milton, Billy "The Kid" Emerson, Boyd Gilmore, Ike and Tina Turner, and much more
A live on-air performance by Johnny Rawls where he went back to his gospel roots
Thanks to Scott Williams and everyone at KJZZ for providing a safe and supportive home for a blues radio show.

quote from the review in the new issue of INMUSIC (Germany):
“Das holländische Label Black & Tan Records ist seit vielen Jahren eine feine Adresse in Sachen Blues und Roots Musik. Nun erscheint zum zweiten Mal ein toller Sampler”

quote from the review in BLUES NEWS (Norway):
„Hollandske Black & Tan Records er nå ute med sin andre slike utgivelse, og de har et meget fint knippe artister å by på. Førsteklasses blå artister som Boo Boo Davis, Doug MacLeod, Billy Jones, Big George Jackson, Byther Smith og Percy Strother er alle å finne på dette selskabet, sammen med litt mindre kjente, men likevel meget habile, artister som Mike Andersen, Turnip Greens, Teresa James og Harrison Kennedy.“

quotes from the review in JUKE BLUES (UK):
„Caution: if you have a problem with modernity, look away now! …. We should applaud such daredevil endeavors and it is time to move on; this works very well and is an effective sampling (no pun intended) of modern trends. I suppose it is primarily aimed at a new and younger audience, but I fear that by doing so, it will alienate the less adventurous blues follower.“

NEW RELEASE by DOUG MACLEOD
DO B&T 908 DOUG MACLEOD Live at XM Radio vol. 2
Recordings were made BY Quinton Roebuck in the studio of XM Radio in November 2007 for Bluesville (Bill Wax). This release will be available as DOWNLOAD ONLY. At the weblog at December 30 you will find the direct link to this release at eMusic.
review of the DVD in JUKE BLUES (UK):
„Doug MacLeod is a talented guitarist and raconteur, famed for his intimate and amusing live shows, so the DVD format is ideal for demonstrating his forte. Along with a typical live concert, we get an interview covering Doug’s life and influences, and also a selection of ‘stories’, such as the one about Big Joe Turner’s teeth. I can’t tell it the way he does; you’ll just have to buy the DVD.“

Eric Lindell
Low On Cash, Rich In Love
Eric Lindell follows up his 2006 debut with Low On Cash, Rich In Love, Eric's rich, smoky vocals lead the way through an infectious blend of roots rock, from smoldering heart-tuggers to rhythm-heavy workouts, Crescent City grooves, to Latin-tinged R&B. Recorded in New Orleans, Low On Cash, Rich In Love will delight Lindell's fan base and will capture the attention of music lovers everywhere.
From the first single Lay Back Down to the undeniable groove of a totally reworked version of Gil Scott-Heron's Lady Day And John Coltrane (the album's sole cover song) to the New Orleans bounce of Tried And True, Low On Cash, Rich In Love is Eric Lindell at his very best. His sinewy and soulful vocals recall 1970s Van Morrison, while his guitar and harmonica work are uniquely his own. With sweet saxophones punching in all the right places and grooves building on top of each other, Eric Lindell has created a timeless collection of songs.
"Terrific, tasty rock 'n' soul, with a New Orleans twist" --Washington Post
“Soulful original songs fuse R&B, swamp pop and funk into a potent, party-time mix.” -- The Chicago Sun-Times

Roomful of Blues
Raisin' A Ruckus
Roomful of Blues has always been one of the tightest, most joyful blues ensembles in the world. With their masterful combination of jumping, horn-heavy, hard-edged blues and R&B, it's no wonder why the great Count Basie called them "the hottest blues band I've ever heard." Raisin' A Ruckus is their return, a foot-stomping CD highlighting the intense vocal and instrumental power of the world's smallest big band.
Currently an eight-piece unit led by guitarist Chris Vachon, the band has never sounded fresher or stronger. In 2007, singer David Howard took over the vocal duties, bringing his gritty and soulful vocals and adding another dimension to their jazzy, jump-blues musical roots. Raisin' A Ruckus swings with ferocity and rocks with urgency and purpose. Moving effortlessly from originals to carefully chosen covers, the expertly executed songs sizzle from start to finish. Room of Blues' winning combination of jump, swing, blues, R&B and soul remains their calling card, as does their ability to fill the dance floor.
"A tour-de-force of horn-fired blues. So tight and so right" --Billboard
"Excellent...marvelous wall-to-wall grooves...between the wicked guitar work and the brassy horn section, things never stop swinging." -- USA TODAY
Listen before you buy!!! Stop by our jukebox page to listen to the tracks Lower On Your List Of Priorities and Talkin' To You Eye To Eye both from Raisin' A Ruckus
